Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark
Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
